yerbamate
  • The mate is an infusion, similar to the tea, it has an ancient origin, was introduced to the world by the Guaranís Indian (Aborigines) of South America, and today it is consumed principally, in Argentina, Uruguay, Paraguay and in a little part of the south of Brazil. A strong setting in character rioplatence this beverage has generated the most diverse sociological and cultural interpretations. Similar to the British five o clock tea, the mate is shared in group, in the family, with friends or at work. The round of the mate, as it is called the moment while this beverage is drunk generates a social peculiar fact. Most adepts describe this tradition as a ritual of friendship. Only one mate and bombilla (Argentinism-and small especial straw for drinking mate) are always used for all. The cebador (Argentinism-Who prepares the mate), heats the water in a large kettle or has a thermo and is who invites the beverage. The mate is prepared with dried leafs of the herb (hilex paraguarensis) called yerba mate. Its name comes from the aborigine language (quilhua mati) that refers to the pumpkin (legenaria vulgaris), traditionally used like a recipient for drinking the infusion.
